Uncollected national identity cards are slowing voter registration in Mt Elgon as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election.
Residents must have valid identity cards before they can register as voters. Local authorities are urging people who applied for the documents to collect them from registration offices and other approved distribution points.
The delay could leave some eligible residents unable to join the voters’ roll in good time. Young Kenyans applying for identification cards for the first time are among those affected by the collection problem.
Officials are also calling for stronger public awareness and closer cooperation between registration officers, local administrators and election officials. Residents have been advised to check whether their cards are ready and collect them as soon as possible.
